The following 10 things are essential to know in no particular order before you get your BJJ blue belt. If you get them, you'll be a success.


1. A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF MAJOR POSITIONS

 

It is important to have a good understanding of the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu. These positions should be understood, regardless of whether you're on the offensive or defensive side.

 

2. A BLUE BELTED KNOWS HOW NOT TO MAKE ANY STUPID (BASIC) MISTAKES

 

Blue belt, it is important to learn how to avoid making stupid, common mistakes. For example, if your opponent mounts, you will push against their chest.

 

However, that doesn't mean you won't make some—questionable moves. You'll know what to do in the interim, and eventually, you will stop making these mistakes.

 

3. PROPER ARMED PLACEMENT

 

It is important to know how to place your arms properly. You must know how to frame your arms as a martial artist properly. Also, learn how not to flare your arms during training. Learn where to place your hands in the most basic situations.

 

4. GRIP FIGHTING

5. AT LEAST 3 TAKEDOWNS

 

While it's OK to roll right from the butt, a blue belt must be proficient in at least three takedowns. You only need to take down three people in or without the Gi.

6. ACCEPTABLE GUARD PASSING

 

You don't have to be the fastest, most dynamic, or best-pressure passer. You should have at least three guard passes for any position.

 

7. 4 SWEEPS AND SUBMISSIONS FROM ALL MAJOR POSITION

 

This one is pretty straightforward. Regardless of your position, you need to know at least four sweeps and submissions.

 

Your skillset will be well-rounded across the Jiu Jitsu range. You can adapt your skills to suit the circumstances.

 

8. YOU CAN PROVIDE BLUES BELTS WITH A REASONABLE ENGAGEMENT

 

Roll with the purple belts and make them think. Blue belts will likely submit you, while purple belts won't tap out. However, it would be best if you were challenging when rolling; help them earn their points by working hard.

 

9. SOLID CONDITIONING

 

It is more than what you know about BJJ. Blue belts' performance will be affected by their conditioning. This must be at an exceptional level.

 

You should be aware of your pace, so you don't burn out within the first few minutes. If that is what you want, don't do it.

 

10. TURNING INTO CLASS REGULARLY
