1.) Learn to train both gi as well as no-gi!
The famous Marcelo Garcia is known for being extremely skilled in both no-gi and gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He says: "I train every day in the gi, and I train once weekly in no-gi. A person who wishes to excel in no-gi must also practice using the traditional Gi." In most cases, when our instructors advise us to practice certain methods, we often are lazy and perform repetitions on the side we prefer. But, having a favourite side doesn't make you balanced. What happens if your adversary gets you caught in your weaker area?
Instead of focusing on the side, we prefer. Instead, we should work on our weaker sides, too. This will allow us to improve quickly and give us greater options when sparring. While it might seem difficult initially, we guarantee that your efforts will be worth it at the end of the day, particularly when you amaze your opponent with a De La Riva sweep on the wrong side!
3) Don't waste a second of your time!
It is always advisable to have several opponents.
We agree that it's important to have a social life and to build relationships with your classmates; you should take advantage of any extra time before and after your class time to BJJ. Imagine that those five minutes before class and the 10 minutes after class you are chatting with your fellow students could have been better utilized to train! If you're looking to go into technicality, you need at least a couple hundred repetitions using two to three different techniques on each side!

4.) Start sparring, starting with the weakest part of you!

Instead of starting with your most-loved Guard pass or working your preferred guard, why don't you try the position in which you're not at the top of your game? 5) Focus!
It's important to be completely engaged when your instructor is explaining the techniques.
In class, it's easy to get lost when you have lots of thoughts going through your head. When you realize it, you're ready to go over specifics and forget what your instructor has just taught you. Get the most out of your training time and pay attention to your instructor's lessons. If you're not adept at memorizing skills, get a notebook and record what you've learned from the class. If you're not one to write notes, find an instructor and practice the methods together before your next class or even after. 6) Get your spars to count!
Sparring is an excellent way to evaluate your technical skills.
The individuals you choose to fight with can significantly impact your Training. Picking easy sparring partners will not be challenging and will cause you to become complacent. This will surely waste the precious time you've set aside to train and will not aid you on the BJJ journey.
Choose a partner who will likely beat you (a higher-ranked belt or instructor, if he's willing to fight) or who is on the same level as you (someone with identical belt ranking and size) as well as an opponent who isn't as tough (a low belt or one who weighs lesser than your). Choosing these three partners lets you improve your offence and defence and learn new techniques.
